If we take the topic of courtship and observe how it is subjected through television, there often seems to be a mixture of signals and messages that come through to the audience. We all know that many television programmes are simply a means to entertain an audience. Don't forget though, that we do get sucked in, despite our intelligent rational and resistance. Many shows on TV depict stories of love because stories of love fascinate and enthrall all walks of life. From comedies to dramas, love is portrayed as comical, shallow, overwhelming, consuming, necessary, romantic, complicated, enlightening and heartbreaking. And of course the subject of love and courtship, if you will, brings many more words to mind than what I have just mentioned.
Today, with a choice of hundreds of channels to surf, the viewer has more choice than ever on which programmes he chooses to watch. Along with this is a bigger exposure to the numerous takes on love that producers supply to the audiences. But many of these TV shows we watch may not be a reflection of the reality, in fact most are not. Overly dramatic representation, or misrepresentation of love, is one of the first realizations that come to my mind when thinking about this. Take a moment to think about any of your favorite shows on TV. Think about the love stories that incorporate that particular show. Can you relate to them, and if so to what extent? I will continue with this subject in my next blog. I just wanted to open it up and begin to get an understanding of where I may really stand on the topic. Hopefully I can dig deeper and probe into what might be an interesting insight into this relationship, and how it can affect our way of thinking about love and courtship.
